Class B RV Buying Guide

Learn About Class B Motorhomes

We get asked about camper vans a lot so we've answered some of the most frequently asked questions about Class B motorhomes below for your convenience. If you want to learn more, read our Class B RV guide. It's filled with our picks for the best Class B RVs and all the important information you need to know before you buy one.

A Class B RV is a type of motorhome built on a standard van chassis. These RVs are sometimes called camper vans or B vans. Class B RVs have many of the same amenities found in larger motorhomes designed to fit within a smaller footprint. The shorter length of a Class B RV also makes them quite flexible; you can use a camper van for camping and traveling or commuting to work.

These mini motorhomes are great for avid travelers because they can take you nearly anywhere. Their smaller size means they are easy to drive and give you the flexibility to go from city roads to campground trails without a problem. Class B RVs are also more fuel efficient than larger motorhomes so you won’t have to fill up as often. Most Class B RVs have everything you need to camp or travel more comfortably. You’ll find beds, kitchens, bathrooms, storage space and more within most Class B RV models so you can avoid lumpy hotel beds, greasy fast food and sketchy public restrooms when traveling.

While a new B van and a full-size SUV will offer similar handling and safety features, Class B RVs have more amenities than a regular passenger vehicle. In addition to extra seats and storage areas for your gear or luggage, you’ll get added conveniences like galley kitchens, fridges, toilets and showers in a B van. Class B RVs also offer greater flexibility for your busy lifestyle. You can use one as your daily driver, take the kids to soccer games, tailgate at your alma mater, travel to your second home or camp more comfortably in them. And you can get all those features and extra comforts in an entry-level Class B RV for about the same price as a well-appointed, full size SUV.

Prices for Class B RVs vary. New Class B RVs can range from around $80,000 for standard gas models to over $150,000 for luxury diesel Class B motorhomes. Used camper vans can be found for less through RV dealers or private sellers. Some of the factors that affect value include age and condition of the vehicle, mileage and optional upgrades or aftermarket parts additions.

The best Class B RV for you is one that has amenities to match your travel plans. Ask yourself how and when you’ll use your B van, who will go with you, where you plan to go, how often you’ll be traveling and what you need to be comfortable. Make a list of must-have amenities and nice-to-have features to help you narrow down the options. For example, if your plans include off-road adventures, a 4x4 equipped B van might be your best option. There are many great manufacturers of Class B motorhomes including:

With all these options you can easily find a Class B motorhome that checks all your boxes. If you need help, consult the RV experts at General RV.

Camper vans typically measure about 20 feet in length and up to 8 feet wide. To help you picture that size, a standard parking space in the US is 8.5 to 9 feet wide and 18 feet long.

Most Class B RVs are similar in size since they are built on a fairly limited number of van chassis platforms. Some popular chassis manufacturers for camper vans include Ford (Transit), Mercedes-Benz (Sprinter van) and RAM (ProMaster).

Certain Class B RVs have towing capabilities so you can bring along a small vehicle or trailer with additional gear. If you want a camper van with towing power, look for diesel options; keep in mind that Class B RVs have less towing capacity than larger motorhomes.

Driving a Class B RV is similar to driving a van or large SUV because these RVs are built on a van chassis. Because these RVs are shorter than other motorhomes, they are easy to handle even for first-time RV owners. Sit behind the driver’s seat and you’ll see that the dashboard and gearshift layout is very similar to other vehicles. Plus, Class B RVs include many of the latest safety features and technology which helps make them the safest type of RV.
