Service Tips

Storing your RV for the cold winter months

It is important to make sure you RV is safe during the winter months from the big changes in temperature to the large amounts of snow. First off:

  • Make sure your unit is properly winterized, all tanks dumped and all water removed with RV antifreeze in the lines.
  • Remove the battery and store in an environment where the temperature is above 50 degrees. If storing in the basement, place the battery on wood or shelving to keep off the floor.
  • Make sure that you have inspected the roof and all caulked areas before setting the RV in its winter storage spot. (Water that can get into the RV in the winter and cause major damage, from the snow that melts and refreezes)
  • Installing tire covers helps eliminate the weathering that occurs from the wind and the snow on the side of the tires. (dry rotting)
  • Make sure all your appliances are cleaned out, especially your refrigerator! Goods can freeze and break then thaw in the spring and cause much unneeded clean up.
  • Always take the time to check in on your investment at least once a month!
  • If you have a Generator in your RV, run it at least once a month! This is important! Generators need to be run! Fuel varnishes and can cause major damage to your carburetor on your generator.
  • Covering your RV with an RV cover keeps the snow and frost from damaging the caulk that is on your roof, it also keeps the wind and sun from fading the color of your RV. If done correctly an RV cover can be used year round when the RV is not in use.
  • If you own a Motor home, chassis batteries and house batteries can freeze and break if left unattended. Cold temperatures will bring down battery voltage until they get to a point of where they can freeze. YOU MUST START AND RUN YOUR MOTOR HOME at least 1-2 times a month, along with your generator. Make sure you run the Motor home long enough to charge the house batteries also, normal time of about 30 minutes.

  • When loading a trailer, adding excessive amounts of weight in the rear can cuase poor towing conditions.
  • If you plan on traveling with fresh water on board, travel with the tank completely full, otherwise if the tank is at half capacity the water moves causing poor towing conditions.
  • Trailers using friction sway controls, be sure that the adjustment lever is not bottoming out causing reduced sway correction.
  • Remember if your unit is equipped with a spare tire, it normally does not contain a jack and lug wrench.
  • Remember to check your lights, brakes, tire pressure, and wheel lugs before each trip.
